Discipling is the Biblical practice of Christians training other Christians (2 Timothy 2:2
However, this process is often taken to extremes by abusive churches and cultic movements. (The International Churches of Christ, which is a cult of Christianity is an extreme example). Discipling is also referred to as shepherding, after the movement that became known for its heavy-handed discipling practices. Thus while proper discipling is a Biblical practice, Christians contemplating involvement in a discipling situation - whether one-on-one or as part of a group - are encouraged to study materials on how to recognize spiritual abuse.
